Helpful Carpet Cleaning Hints (Tips and Hints)
There are things you can do, between professional cleanings, to keep
your carpets and area rugs in good condition. The first thing to remember
is, vacuum on a regular basis. A thorough vacuuming with a good vacuum
cleaner will both prolong the life of your rugs and keep them healthier.
You cannot avoid carpet cleaning altogether but you may be able to
stretch the time between professional cleaning and your carpets will
definitely look better.
Spots & stains
We suggest that you avoid using over the counter spot removers. Many
will permanently discolor your carpet. You may not notice it right after
you spot but it will pop right into view after your carpets are cleaned.
Many spots can be eliminated if you deal with them immediately. Wet
the spot with warm (not hot) water and blot (don't rub) the spot. Repeat
this several times, blotting each time using a clean, white cloth. If
water alone does not remove the spot, add a mild soap to the water. Again,
blot with a clean white cloth. You'd be amazed at how many spots will
disappear using this method.
If the spot is stubborn or you've spilled something that you know is
not going to succumb to water (like nail polish!), call a professional
cleaning company immediately.
Create your own spot removal kit by mixing one of the following four
solutions.
1. One cup of water with one teaspoon of Dish detergent
2. One cup of water with one teaspoon of Laundry detergent
3. One tablespoon of clear ammonia with one-half cup of water
4. One-third cup of distilled vinegar to two-thirds cup water
Always test a small area first, when using anything stronger than mild
soap!
When a spot or stain occurs, it is important to:
- Act quickly. The longer a spot or stain remains in the carpet, the
harder it is to remove.
- Use a clean white towel and blot the stain to remove as much liquid
or scrape up as much solid material as you can.
- Apply the appropriate spot remover for each type of stain.
- Always work toward the center of the spot when cleaning.
- Repeat steps, if necessary, and always blot between steps with a
clean white towel.
- Be careful not to over wet the area.
